Fed up of Commuting?

by Alison Hawkins
Date: Feb 2016

Is your daily commute to work wearing you down? You're certainly not alone. The number of commuters in the UK spending more than two hours travelling to and from work each day has increased dramatically by 72% over the past ten years. Even worse, when it comes to commutes of three hours per day and above, one of the biggest rises is in the West Midlands, at 87%.

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) believes these increases may be explained by:

- The 2008 recession leading to an increase in the number of people needing to travel longer distances to secure a job

- Soaring rents and high house prices leaving workers unable to move to areas closer to their places of work

- Lack of investment in roads and railways meaning that a journey now takes longer than it used to

Whatever the reason, the result is the same. A long commute reduces life satisfaction. I'm thankful to work very close to home now, but for over 5 years I had a daily commute of around two and a half hours. Doing that by train wasn't so bad, I could read a book whilst squashed in a corridor with what felt like the population of Birmingham, but by car was awful. I doubt I'm alone when I say I made up games and checkpoints just to lessen the suffering. Don't even mention winter commuting to me!

More and more companies are introducing home and flexi-working now which helps, but these benefits aren't always made clear in job adverts and it is most definitely not recommended that you ask about this in a first interview!

This is where we can help you. Our consultants here at Swindale Parks will assist you in finding not only a job you'll love, but a job within a comfortable commuting distance for you. Life is too short to spend hours every week travelling to and from work, so if you're looking for a better work-life balance in your Sales, Marketing or Creative career, get in touch with us today on 0121 585 6079 or a.hawkins@swindaleparks.co.uk.
